Here we go again with hysterical headlines and scare 'em stupid stories in the press.

I saw the Sun's version, but i'm told the Daily Mail is going for it as well.

Back in the late 1980's this sort of story was commonplace – remember the 1989 ' SATANISTS ATE MY BABY' based on a lie from a troubled and mentally ill lady?

Horror movies laid down the core themes of the myth (the “Exorcist” and “Rosemary's Baby” spring to mind) and as there's no story like an old story the media have continually re-cycled them in various ways since.

The demands for high levels of social and cultural compliance in our society, the alienation caused by the IT revolution has led to anxieties in the population. The people responsible for scaring us about our children have build their careers by manipulating these fears.

1984 is long past. Children are now entrained by the general media far more than by their cultural peers. In short, the media appears now to have actually created the crimes in reality which it invented as fiction during the 1970s!  

Is it not bad enough that kids can commit this sort of crime without adding to the hysteria and glamming the situation up for sensational impact by stressing the “satanic” elements. I was forced to wonder how on earth it could be proven that they stabbed their victims 666 times when the bodies had supposedly been eaten? Or are we taking this on face value? It was this sort of irrationality which led to the Orkney Island kids being snatched from their innocent parents and kept in kid's homes for a decade or so. Hows that for a child scare?

The problem is the more these ideas are drip fed to the public the more credible the ludicrous claims appear. It becomes harder and harder to see the distinction between fact and fiction. What have these crimes to do with being a Goth? – nothing. What have they got to do with being a Satanist? – it's hard to see any real evidence in the media's reporting. What have they got to do with selling newspapers? - opportunistic as ever the media jump on the circus again.
